I was working in a wine bar in my home town of Croydon back in 1979, I was just 20. Shirreffs wine bar was located in a cellar in George Street, that had live music a couple of times a week and I got to hear music by Carole King, Joni Michell, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and Jim Croce for the first time, played by various musicians including ‘Marianne’ a solo guitarist – who performed great covers of their music.
Here are some of the songs I remember from those live music sessions.
Carole King – Will I still love you tomorrow?
Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi (Probably one of the first songs about the environment)
Carly Simon – You’re so vain (Mick Jagger backing vocal)
James Taylor – You’ve got a friend
Cat Stevens – How can I tell you?
Jim Croce – I’ll have to say I love you in a song
Jim Croce – Time in a bottle
